Folic acid

Folic acid (the supplemental form of folate) is a B group vitamin which aids development and growth. Increasing the amount of folate in your diet in the lead up to and during pregnancy can help prevent neural tube defects, such as spina bifida.

It contains 800mcg folic acid, which is clinically proven to reduce the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida2, iron to help prevent iron deficiency and iodine to assist in the development of baby’s brain. Along with these key ingredients, Elevit also contains a range of vitamins and minerals to help support baby's development such as vitamin B3 (nicotinamide), vitamin D and minerals such as zinc, magnesium, selenium and B complex vitamins which are all in quantities which are aligned to the current Australian recommended daily intake during pregnancy.
Elevit contains the highest level of folic acid and iron compared to leading pregnancy multivitamins, as at August 2020. This is why it's only available from pharmacies. It is also a convenient one tablet a day compared to many supplements which require 2 large capsules/tablets daily.

The original Elevit formulation (Elevit Pronatal) was used in a large study that looked at the prevention of first occurrence of neural tube defects, and contained 800mcg of folic acid. Elevit has maintained 800mcg of folic acid based on this study and has been updated to include the addition of iodine.
Elevit, in conjunction with a healthy diet, helps to meet the increased nutritional requirements that occur throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. Despite even with the best intentions it can be difficult to meet these increased nutrient requirements from diet alone. For example there is an increased requirement for iron during pregnancy, and Elevit can help prevent dietary iron deficiency. Likewise, there is an increased need for folic acid and iodine throughout pregnancy. Other vitamins and minerals that are required at higher levels throughout pregnancy include zinc, calcium, vitamin C, B6 and B12.
Take one tablet daily while trying to conceive and throughout pregnancy. It is important to take Elevit daily for 4 weeks prior to conception (or as directed by your healthcare professional).
Take the whole tablet with water and preferably a meal. If suffering morning sickness it is recommended to take Elevit at midday or in the evening.
