About Elevit DHA:
DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid which is essential for healthy brain and eye function. DHA isn’t something we can naturally produce much of, therefore it has to be obtained through diet or supplementation. While DHA can be obtained through diet by eating fish and seafood products, many women don’t eat the recommended serves of these types of foods, that’s why we developed Elevit DHA.
Omega-3s are important components of cell membranes. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, nutritional requirements for DHA are increased as DHA is utilised for the normal development of the brain, nervous system and eyes of the growing foetus and baby.
The first 1000 days of a baby's life, from conception to their 2nd birthday, are a critical period for brain and eye development. While DHA plays a key role in this, most pregnant and breastfeeding women do not get enough through diet alone as they can be cautious about eating fish during this time.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, it is recommended to supplement to reach adequate levels and in turn support your growing baby.
While there is no RDI for DHA in pregnancy, local and international guidelines recognise that it is an important nutrient during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and that many women may not obtain enough from fish food sources. The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommend that women whose dietary intake of omega 3 fatty acids is low consider dietary supplementation5. The European Food Safety Authority recommends that pregnant and breastfeeding women take 100-200mg DHA per day, in addition to recommendations for healthy adults (200mg is roughly equivalent to one tin of tuna (95g).
